Humanism and Humanist Counselling Jeffery Geibel Jr Psychology 304 Ms. Sharisse Fields October 24, 2016 Abstract This essay examines a humanistic approach to counselling. It defines what it is to be human and what humanism is. It further will focus on the Psychological approaches of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow which primarily focus on obtaining self-actualization. It will also briefly touch on the importance of person-centered therapy, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and Rogers’ view on obtaining actualization through the Organismic Valuing Process. Well, it is a method that was originally pioneered by Carl Rogers, which focusses on obtaining self-actualization. It was later put into a different perspective by Abraham Maslow but still relied strongly upon Rogers’ work with the theory. What is humanism? According to Copson and Grayling (2015), â€Å"Humanism is a democratic and ethical life stance, which affirms that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives† (p. 4). It is further defined as, â€Å"A philosophy or set of beliefs, that holds that human beings achieve a system of morality through their own reasoning rather than through a belief in any divine being† (Copson Grayling, 2015, p. 4).
